ANNAPOLIS- Md. - The Lehigh men and the Navy women hold the Championship heading into the final day of competition at the 2002 Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships, taking place at Navy's Lejeune Hall through Saturday, February 16.
The American swimmers were once again on a record pace, breaking three more Patriot League Championship meet records on day two. In the preliminary heat of the 100-yd backstroke, American junior Mark Liscinsky topped the old mark of 50.14 set by Bucknell's Don Steenson in 1992 with a time of 50.12 and broke his own record in the final with a time of 49.87. Liscinsky also anchored the 800-yd freestyle relay team to a first-place finish (6:50.28).
In the 400-yd individual medley, AU sophomore Ethan Bassett broke Atsushi Ohtaka's meet record in the from 1998 with a championship winning time of 3:56.45. Bassett's record in the 400 IM goes along with the record mark that he set in the 500-yd freestyle yesterday. The American women's 800-yd freestyle relay team set the meet record, touching the wall in 7:37.20.
Navy senior Melissa Hawley posted her second win of the Championship with a victory in the 400-yd individual medley (4:29.49). Hawley's teammate, freshman Tori Throckmorton, the individual points leader after the second day, captured the win in the 100-yd butterfly (57.80).
In the men's 100-yd butterfly final, Colgate juniors Matt Vuturo and James Hadley were locked in quite a battle. Vuturo earned the top spot on the podium, edging out Hadley, 51.01-51.02.
Army senior Lucas Myers added to his medal collection with a victory in the 200-yd freestyle with a time of 1:40.26, while American sophomore Dominic Szabo posted a NCAA provisional time in the 100-yd breaststroke with a mark of 55.28 in the prelims and came back with a winning time of 55.64 in the final.
A trio of American women's swimmers brought home top finishes on the second day, led by junior Stina Lindman in the 100-yd breaststroke (1:04.97). Rounding out the list of AU winners are senior Junkal Irigoien in the 100-yd backstroke (57.38) and sophomore Jessica Lindstrom in the 200-yd freestyle (1:52.15).
In the women's one-meter dive, defending Patriot League Diver of the Meet senior Kim Rinaldi of Holy Cross successfully defended her crown with a score of 259.35.
Other winners on the middle day of competition include, the Navy women's 200-yd medley relay team (1:47.40) and the American men's 200-yd medley relay team (1:33.20).
